Putting mat or indoor putting green?
A mat is narrow and rolls up; a green is wider, with recessed cups. Pick by the room, and by real drops or drills.

What types of putting mats are there?
Five main kinds, by the picks in our list: narrow drill mats with a ramp cup and a ball return (Perfect Practice, SKLZ), slim mats with printed aim and pace targets and no hole (WellPutt), dense turf with recessed regulation-width cups (PrimePutt), app-tracked greens (PUTTR), and foam greens made to order with breaks you set (BirdieBall).
How much room does an indoor putting green need?
The length of the mat, plus room behind the ball for the stroke and past the cup for a backstop. In our list that starts at 8 ft (Perfect Practice Compact) and runs to 15 ft (PrimePutt XXL) and 15 ft 6 in (Perfect Practice Extra Long); BirdieBall cuts its greens to the room, 2, 3 or 4 ft wide.
Does a putting mat work on carpet or a hard floor?
Both, but the floor changes the speed. Perfect Practice says its mat plays near 14 on the Stimpmeter on a hard floor and near 10 on thick carpet; PrimePutt states 10 on a hard floor or low-pile carpet. WellPutt needs a flat floor, and its latex underlayer grips it.
How do you store a putting mat?
Most roll up. PrimePutt says to lift out the cups and backstop and roll up the green; PUTTR stores in its box; BirdieBall rolls up and lies flat again. Give a mat time to lie flat after unrolling: one review of the Perfect Practice mat found it took about a day.
